Tilt-Up Construction vs. Precast Concrete Constructions

Tilt up constructions and precast constructions are both quite famous in the building industry and construction processes but offer a significant difference.

Tilt-up construction involves the use of tilt-up panels which in the process of construction are not quite always load-bearing. As opposed to the precast concrete constructions, there is no need for a structural frame in tilt-up construction. Structural frames, in this case, are usually to resist service loads but the tilt-up panels do not require any assistance for resistance.
Precast concrete constructions, however, involves full-height structural panels. They are not dependable on the separate structural frame, but due to transportation requirements, they are usually constructed with smaller widths.

Tilt-Up Construction

tilt up construction exampleThe tilt-up construction method involves the processes of site-casting concrete walls. The process is usually done in horizontal surfaces before being tilted vertically to fit in place. The tilt-up construction process is divided into two categories. To begin with, the first phase includes slabs of concrete that consists of various sections of walls.
These slabs are, therefore, cast on the floor slab. The process is done until the casted wall strengthens enough to be lifted, after which are lifted by cranes. Straight from the construction site, they are tilted and lifted to the planned foundation site to create walls.

Benefits of Tilt-up Construction Walls

They are Flexible with Architectural Expressions – the most attractive thing about tilt-up construction is the plain smooth feature they portray. Tilt-up construction can also allow for the creative employment of colors and a variety of texture.

Enable Financial Gain- the old traditional construction is currently at the edge due to the invention of tilt-up construction. The style has been adopted for a wide range of buildings, most probably for its elasticity. Also, it promotes lower insurance premium compared to the traditional methods.

Tilt-Up Walls Are Fire Resistant –unlike the traditional construction processes, tilt-up panels have been an added advantage to constructions. First, they are easy to design and secondly, they result in the creation of fire-resistant walls.

Precast Concrete Construction

The only difference here is that, with precast concrete, the panels are pre-casted at a large manufacturing facility. Also; this method can withstand different weather and is always poured indoors. The indoor casting of precast concrete has been an added advantage as it can be done at all time regardless of the weather conditions.

After they receive the required strength, they are ferried to the site and similar to tilt-up wall, the precast concrete walls are assembled to create a wall.

Precast construction requires restructuring, generally, to the whole construction process. This is the only way there can be an easy interaction between the design and production planning. As a result, the process becomes fast and efficient as opposed to before.

The precast building is economical and can build up to ten storeys high. Precast has numerous features with some of them being the division and specialization of the human workforce and use of tools and machinery amongst others.

In conclusion, as we have seen, there is no much difference between these two construction methods. However, in many cases, tilt-up appears to be the most popular one for its flexibility. Precast, therefore, has been ranked high as an option when the weather conditions are not favorable.
